Scholarship budget for +2 likely to freeze

Himalayan News Service

April 05, 2014

The budget allocated for Plus Two Science scholarships is likely to freeze this year due to lack of sufficient applicants.

The government had allocated Rs 45 million for scholarship for students of Plus Two Science, but out of the total only Rs 2.5 million has been released to the districts, while remaining amount is likely to freeze.

The government had announced Rs 3,000 for each student for 10 months as scholarship for those applying to study Plus Two Science in the neighbouring district because of lack of higher secondary school with Science in their own district.

Last year, Tribhuvan University phased out Proficiency Certificate Level because it wanted to develop the university as a good destination for higher studies. Student unions affiliated to various political parties protested against the phase-out and demanded one Plus Two faculty in each constituency.

Later, the Ministry of Education committed to open a Plus Two college with science faculty in those districts, which had more number of Science students and give scholarship to students of other districts that do not have their own plus two schools with science faculty.

According to Department of Education, only 84 students from various districts have applied to study in eight districts.

Khag Raj Baral, director, Department of Education, said applicants for scholarship was very insignificant.

Twenty-four students from various neighbouring districts are going to study in Ilam, five Students in Jhapa, seven in Surkhet, nine in Rukum, ten in Kathmandu, ten in Dhankuta, seven in Dang and two in Dolakha.
