Provincial medical college to be established in Rupandehi

 Rekha Bhusal, BUTWAL, March 25: The government of Province 5 has decided to establish a government medical college in Rupandehi, the temporary capital of the province.

The medical college is being established with the intention of producing the province's own health-related manpower, in order to provide easy, accessible and specialized services to the people. As informed by Basudev Ghimire, mayor of Tilottama Municipality, the prime minister inaugurated the master plan on Friday.

The provincial teaching hospital is aimed to be constructed on an area of 200 bighas of land in Shankar Nagar and Karahiya community forest located in ward number 1 and 8 of Tilottama Municipality. The project which is estimated to cost around Rs 10 billion will consist of two buildings and all other necessary physical infrastructures. Man Bahadur Ghimire of 'Butwal Medical College Infrastructure Development and Construction Association' told Republica that the project is to be completed and brought to full function within five years.

The 300-bed hospital will be under Tribhuvan University. The college intends to welcome its first MBBS students ideally after three years of proper operation. The government has announced seven such hospitals, one in each province, with the intention of making each province self-sufficient in health-related manpower. The Council of Ministers has accepted the proposal to establish 'Infrastructure Development and Construction Association (IDCA) for the upcoming medical colleges in Rupandehi (Province 5), Mahottari (Province 2) and Surkhet (Karnali Province). A budget of Rs 300 million has been allocated from this year's annual budget (100 million for each college) for the construction of the colleges at the said locations. Rupandehi currently has two private medical colleges.
