The agitating professors’ bodies have agreed to withdraw their ongoing protest programmes against the appointment of vice chancellors (VC) on Tuesday. The professors unions close to Nepali Congress and UCPN-Maoist decided to lift the lockout of the offices of the universities after a meeting with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai held in the Capital today.

The previous government led by Jhala Nath Khanal had appointed VCs at seven universities, including Tribhuvan University on August 8. NC-aligned Nepal Democratic Professors Union (NDPU) and the pro-Maoist National Professors Association (NPA) had padlocked the offices of the various universities on August 9 protesting the ‘unfair ‘appointment of the VCs.
