Sankhuwasabha - There is a high number of girl students in most of the community schools. According to the District Education Office, there is a high number of girl students as of the student's description 2074.
There is a total of 40,574 students in the district. The total number of the student studying in the community schools is 35,886. The total number of girl students in the school is 18,157 whereas the number of boy students is 17,729.
There are a number of reasons why there are more girl students in the school than boy students. District Education Officer Chetprasad Pokhrel said, “It is difficult to point out the exact reasons why there is a high number of girl students without researches.” He added, "sending the son to a good school and sending the daughter to the community school may have also been a reason behind this situation." There is a total of 5 secondary schools, 14 lower secondary schools and 1 higher secondary schools in the institutional schools. Among those, only a few schools have the number of boy students more than the number of girl students. Most of the schools have the number of schoolgirls more. There is still a tendency to give more priority to the son in the society.
Medini Ghimire, principal of Mahendra Intermediate School said that most parents sent the son to private school and the daughter to the community school which was the reason community schools had more number of girl students. 'The son is sent to a good boarding school or a school in the city’ she said, ‘The daughter is sent to a community school in the village and due to this discrimination, the difference is seen. '
According to School Inspector Santosh Baral of District Education Office, most of the boy students who have completed the SEE leave the school for employment which could also be the reason for the number of girl students being more. "The mentality of parents to give birth to a boy child after first girl child is born may be one of the reasons the number of girl students is more," he said, ‘The trend of giving continuous birth to girl child with the hope of a boy child, has resulted in increasing the number of females.’
After 16-17 years of age, most of the teenagers of rural areas go abroad for employment, he said, 'This is also a major reason. In the district, there are 43 community schools, 62 lower secondary schools, 47 secondary schools and 20 higher secondary schools.’
