NSU to remove hoardings of +2 colleges with foreign names

Nepal Students Union, student wing of the Nepali Congress, is all set to remove the hoarding boards of Plus Two colleges that bear foreign names.  According to Education Act, academic institutions should have a Nepali name.

NSU had earlier given a memorandum with an ultimatum till today to the Ministry of Education, Higher Secondary Schools’ Association of Nepal, Private and Boarding Schools Association of Nepal and all the concerned stakeholders, urging them to remove the hoarding boards of those Plus Two colleges that have foreign names.

NSU Spokesman UP Lamichhane said they were going to take the job into their own hands of removing such hoarding boards from the city area as the concerned authorities and Plus Two colleges failed to pay heed to their call. NSU said it would begin its campaign from tomorrow.

“Establishing Plus Two colleges with foreign names is against nationality, and to some extent such move becomes a source of harassment for those students who don’t get to study in these colleges with non-Nepali names,” said Lamichhane, adding that the claims made by such institutions that they have affiliation with so and so universities abroad were only aimed at alluring students and that they hardly had any truth.

There are a number of Plus Two colleges which have been named after some foreign colleges or universities.

Lamichhane said they would either be removing the hoarding boards or paint them black. “If they continue to ignore our calls for removing the boards on their own, we will even padlock the colleges,” he said.

Stating that it’s only a beginning, Lamichhane said NSU would gradually pressure the colleges to revise their fee structure as well and impart quality education.
