Licensure exam made mandatory for engineers

June 17, 2020

The government is making licensure examination mandatory for engineering graduates as an effort to regulate the engineering profession. Doctors, nurses and lawyers had been providing services only after passing the license exam but license was not needed for engineering graduates.  After the implementation of the Act, the students who have studied engineering will be able to work only after getting the license of the council.

The Development and Technology Committee of the House of Representatives has passed the Engineering Council Act Amendment Bill and made the examination compulsory for engineers. From now on wards, the students who have studied engineering will be able to work only after passing the license examination from the council.

The Engineering Council will take the license exam at least twice a year. The bill also includes a provision to revoke the licenses of engineers who do not follow professional conducts. The bill also ensures the recommendation of the council mandatory when establishing a new engineering college and starting a new subject.
