For the first time, the Institute of Engineering (IoE) under the Tribhuvan University (TU) is all set to conduct its entrance examinations online to rule out question paper leak and other unethical practices in and outside the exam halls.
Prof Bharat R Pahari, IoE dean, said they have already formed a taskforce to prepare guidelines for the entrance tests within three months.
A couple of months back, the IoE had to annul its entrance examination for the Bachelors of Architecture programme after revelation that some people had leaked the question papers a day before the test. Police later arrested 14 people involved in this case.
Pahari said they are going online after other efforts to control the question paper leak failed. He said, “Though our examination system is more qualitative than others, some outsiders are trying to weaken it of late. By going online, we want to make our exams credible and qualitative.”
The taskforce is tasked with preparing a report suggesting ways to make the examination system more credible.
“From the next academic session, IoE examinations will go online like other international examinations such as SAT and GRE. Right now, we are awaiting the guidelines to switch to this system,” he said. “After adoption of the new system, the students themselves will be able to check their results.”
The IOE, which has four constituent campuses and 10 affiliated campuses across the country, conducts entrance examinations on behalf of these campuses for all levels of engineering courses. Around 18,000 students participate in the entrance exam for the engineering courses for which there are around 2,500 quotas. Engineering studies in campuses under the IOE in Nepal are considered the best in South Asia.
