Hard foreign lessons for Nepal schools

The fire of nationalism is spreading in Nepal, although the country has never been technically colonized.

Student activists are fueling the flame with protests against schools that use foreign-sounding names.

Kathmandu is joining in the act by banning 250 secondary schools named after European and US historical figures, institutions and places, such as "Einstein Academy," "Pentagon College," "Oxbridge," "White House" and "NASA."

Some students have wrecked computers in a Kathmandu college and torched school buses.

The fury comes despite foreign sources funding 25 percent of Nepal's 65-billion-rupee (HK$5.6 billion) education budget.
