Aug 28: The government has recently approved the structure of school curricula, bringing back Mathematics in the course subjects of Bio Group students of Grade 11 and 12.
The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) approved by the government on June 1 was widely criticized by the stakeholders after mathematics was excluded from the subjects of Bio Group students of Grade 11 and 12. Mathematics was only an optional subject for the group at that time.
"We approved the NCF over a week ago," said Krishna Prasad Kapri, executive director at the Curriculum Development Center (CDC). "Now, the students of Bio Group should study one compulsory Mathematics and another optional math instead of other optional subject--Life Skill," said Kapri. "There was a rumor that mathematics had been removed from the curriculum of Bio Group students of Grade 11 and 12 at that time just because it was yet to be divulged," he claimed.
The second draft of the NCF proposed compulsory Math and Science for all groups of Grade 11 and 12 students. It also included Social Studies as a compulsory subject. The final draft approved on June 1 removed Math and Science as compulsory subjects for all Grade 11 and 12.
Math and Science are not compulsory for all now after the revision, said Kapri. "English, Nepali and Social Studies are compulsory subjects in Grade 11 and 12. The subjects of other grades are as same as the NCF approved on June 1," he added."The new curricula will be implemented in the schools from April 15, 2019."
As per the Constitution of Nepal 2015, the Education Act has provisioned the school education up to Grade 12, categorizing Grade 0 to 8 as basic or elementary and Grade 9-12 as secondary school.
