Ethiopian PM bags 2019 Nobel Peace Prize


Abiy Ahmed Ali, the prime minister of Ethiopia has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced. Ali is the first Ethiopian to receive the prestigious award.

The Nobel Committee stated that the Abiy Ahmed Ali was awarded the prize to recognize his efforts in attaining peace and international cooperation, and resolving border conflicts. During his first 100 days of office, he has lifted Ethiopia’s state of emergency, granted amnesty to political prisoners, withdrawn media censorship, legalized banned opposition groups, and taken several other initiatives to strengthen democracy and uphold peace.

Ethiopia has been facing so many problems lately regarding refugees and ethnic rivalries and the prime minister has been actively involved in solving the ongoing problems. The Nobel committee hopes his contribution in coming days will bring changes in the second most populous country in East Africa.
