Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi, who is also Chancellor of the Tribhuvan University (TU), directed in writing to TU Vice-Chancellor Dr Hira Bahadur Maharjan to annul the appointment of Dr Shashi Sharma as dean of the Institute of Medicine.
Regmi, who is also the Chancellor of the TU issued directives as per the clause 16 (sub-clause 3) of Tribhuvan University Act 2049, which allows him to inspect and direct on any issues related to the university.
He iissued the directive to VC Maharjan not to implement TU’s earlier decision to appoint Dr Sharma as IoM dean. Chairman Regmi also asked VC Mahajan to report him regarding the removal of the dean within 24 hours.
Appointment of controversial Dr Sashi Sharma as the dean of IOM sparked widespread protests. Dr Govinda KC, senior professor at the IoM is in a fast-unto-death since January 11, demanding the annulment of the appointment, autonomous status of Institute of Medicine, stop giving affiliation to newly established medical colleges unless clear guidelines regarding need of medical colleges is formulated based on current and future requirements of the country.
