B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, in collaboration with Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium and Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal is conducting a 9th edition of "Training in Tropical and Infectious Diseases" from 26th August to 21st September to be held at BPKIHS, Dharan.

B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in collaboration with Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium and Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal has been conducting a Short Term Training in Tropical and Infectious Diseases from 2009

Infectious and Tropical Diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Nepal. Doctors working at  peripheral hostpital with limited resources are challenged in its management. Also with development and  availability of newer diagnostic tests and drugs there is a need for continued medical education in this field.  B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in collaboration with Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium and Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal is conducting this course since 2009.

Objectives
This professional training in primarily clinically- oriented and targets medical doctors to improve their clinical effectiveness and efficiency in tropical and infectious disease.
The general objective of the training are :

  1. To upgrade their knowledge and skills regarding the clinical as well as preventive and curative management of tropical and infectious disease in children and adults, in Nepal
  2. To strengthen their skill:
    1. For deferential diagnosis by an in-depth analysis of the epidemiological context, clinical findings, laboratory and imaging results, and
    2. For clinical management taking into account the scarcity of recourses and national control strategies.

Teaching Method and Faculty

Interactive lectures, supplemented by audio-visual presentations, case demonstration, case discussion, ward round, role-play and lab demonstration. National and International experts will facilitate the teaching learning activities.

Training Assessment

Pre test and post test at the beginning & end of the training. Thorough structured student feedback questionnaire at the end of the training,. The training is divided into several modules and includes:

  1. • Tuberculosis & Leprosy
  2. • HIV / AIDS, STI
  3. • Hepatitis
  4. • Acute febrile illness
  5. • Vector-borne disease: malaria, visceral leishmaniasis, Japanese encephalitis, Lymphatic Filariasis
  6. • Water and food –borne disease and soil transmitted diseases
  7. • Rabies, tetanus and snake bite
  8. • Emerging infectious disease : dengue and influenza
  9. • Outbreak investigation and response
  10. • Clinical epidemiology and evidence based medicine

Library & Computing Facilities

A specialist library with comprehensive range of books & periodicals in the field of infectious disease, outbreak investigation and evidence based medicine.

Computer laboratory that includes access to internet with latest software.

The course co-ordinators will help candidates find suitable accommodation within easy reach of University on their request

Eligibility

Doctors with MBBS degree or equivalent and registered with Nepal Medical Council
