Businesses, governments, and society are prioritizing sustainability and sustainable development in today’s fast-changing world. A paradigm shift toward sustainability is needed to address climate change, resource depletion, social inequity, and environmental deterioration. Sustainability refers to the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It encompasses a holistic approach that balances economic growth, social well-being, and environmental health.
To navigate the complexities of the 21st century, one must integrate sustainable development into all areas of human activity. In developing countries like Nepal, manufacturing, banking, hydroelectricity, insurance, and tourism sectors can lead the shift toward a sustainable economy. By adopting sustainable practices, these sectors can ensure all stakeholders are considered in decision-making, yielding positive impacts. Recently, Nepal has worked to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), a goal achievable only if sustainability metrics are prioritized as they are in developed nations.
