Agitating professors today staged an hour-long sit-in in front of the central offices of all universities to protest against recent appointments of vice-chancellors.
Prime Minister and Chancellor Jhala Nath Khanal, on recommendation of Education Minister Ganga Lal Tuladhar, had appointed VCs in seven universities including Tribhuvan University, on August 8.
A day after the appointments, Nepali Congress and UCPN-Maoist-aligned professors unions, Democrats Professors Association (DPA) and Nepal National Professors Organisation respectively, padlocked the universities demanding to revoke the decision. Today is the 12th day of their agitation.
DPA president prof Guna Nidhi Neupane said the sit-in was organised to force the government to take the issue seriously.
He said, “Since the government was not serious on our demands, we were forced to introduce new protest programmes”, adding they wanted government to realise the mistake.
He said they had also appealed to new VCs not to accept the appointment letters unless the government settles the issue.
“We have not yet received any official call from the Education Ministry for talks,” he said adding, “Unofficial calls through media would not be entertained.”
Meanwhile, except for Prof Bhattarai of Pokhara University, other six VCs already attended the meeting of University Coordination Committee in University Grants Commission (UGC). Prof Bhattarai was former president of Nepal University Teachers’ Association.
Newly appointed VCs are, Dr Hira Bahadur Maharjan (TU), Prof Shiva Hari Marahattha (Nepal Sanskrit University), Dr Jaya Raj Awasthi (Far Western University), Prof Kailash Nath Pyakurel (Agriculture and Forestry University), Prof Maheshwor Man Shrestha (Purbanchal University), Prof Padam Lal Devkota (Mid Western University) and Prof Khagendra Bhattarai (Pokhara University).
