The reduced number of seats for MBBS has led to the reduced number of scholarships quota. According to sources, in three years 71 students have been deprived to study MBBS in scholarship due to reduced number of seats.

The free of cost quota was provided to 256 till 2014 which has come down to 185 in 2016. The decrement in the new admission seats has consequently led to the reduced number of the scholarship seats.

With the decreased seats the tendency of students to approach foreign universities is inevitbale. Students along with their parents decide to opt for abroad when they don’t get opportunity in the country. With the students going foreign a large amount of money worth 20 to 30  billion goes out of the country each year.

From 2014 to 2016, some three thousand three hundred and eighteen students have gone abroad for MBBS or BDS programs.

Similarly, the seats allocated for MD is 569 in Nepal but two thousand six hundred and fifty nine students have appraoched foreign universities for their MD studies.

When the students can not make through the entrance examinations in the country they pursue their studies abroad, this manpower when returns to the country can affect the quality of service provided. According to the chairman of the Nepal Medical Council, Dr. Dharma Kanta Baskota , an entrance examination will be organized for the students opting for foreign Degree as well in the future.

In a program organized by the Investigation Committee of Medical Education, officials from different medical colleges discussed the effect of reserved quota in the quality of the manpower produced and about making a provision of minimum score in the reserved quota as well.

Similarly, former vice –chancellor of Patan Academy of Health Sciences stated that an individual cannot get to study medical sciences just on the basis of desire and needs to fulfill the specific criteria.

Overall, the program discussed on the quality of manpower that the country is getting in the medicine and the criteria that need to be implemented to regulate the hapazard production medical graduates.
