With the ouster of Dr Sangita Bhandari , a three-member committee has been formed to recommend a new vice-chancellor (VC) for the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS). The committee is led by Health Minister Rajendra Mahato and includes Education Ministry Secretary Som Lal Subedi and National Planning Commission member Shiva Kumar Rai. The committee is likely to start work from Sunday.
The PAHS Act 2008 specifies that the chairperson of the committee formed to recommend a VC shall be the health minster while the other members shall be appointed by the prime minister, who is also chancellor of the PAHS. The committee will recommend three eligible candidates and the chancellor will appoint the VC from among them.
After the Cabinet endorsed a bill establishing Patan Hospital as a teaching institute in 2007, Dr Arjun Karki was made its first VC. When his four-year term ended in August last year, he was replaced by Dr Sangita Bhandari , who had been heading the ENT Department at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan for eight years. However, just five months into her appointment, Dr Bhandari was removed by the PAHS Senate last week.
Meanwhile, many doctors and faculty members at the institutions said the new VC needs to be from among the senior doctors of the institution itself. “Many doctors are motivated to work in this institution simply due to its vision. We are doing our best to produce doctors who are willing to serve the rural community,” said one doctor on condition of anonymity.
