The government will be introducing a national assessment system to evaluate students’ academic progress.
Speaking at an interaction programme organised by Education Journalists Group, Shankar Panday, Secretary at Ministry of Education, today said a team from the ministry is doing the groundwork to prepare guidelines for the assessment system.
He said: “The assessment will determine the level of students’ learning and ways to improve them”.
Surya Prasad Gautam, exam controller, Office of the Controller of Examinations, SLC board, said they were giving priority to SLC though it is no different from other final exams.
He said: “We are causing mental stress to students by projecting it as an iron gate,” adding, “We should change this mentality.”
Educationist Dr Gopi Lal Neupane stated that people are under more stress while giving SLC exams. If they change the evaluation system from the current numerical grading system to alphabetical grading system, they can mitigate the stress and stop activities like cheating during the exam.
He also suggested that SLC marks should be reduced from 800 to 500, with 300 marks allocated for vocational subjects.
Dil Bahadur Joshi, President of Nepal Teachers’ Union, said cheating during examinations should be prohibited right from the primary level. The education system, teachers’ recruitment, school infrastructure and the education act and policies should be reviewed to make the SLC exam fair, he maintained.
Suprabhat Bhandari of Guardians Association of Nepal said that changes should be brought in the exam to avoid cheating and other unfair activities.
