Ministry of Education has directed universities and medical colleges to follow the fee structure set by the government for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD/MS) studies.

A press statement issued here today by Hari Lamsal, joint secretary, MoE, said the ministry has already sent a letter to this effect to the Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal Academy of Medical Sciences and Nepal Medical Council on September 22.

According to the statement, the Social Committee of the Cabinet had asked the MoE to implement its decision on the fee structure set for medical colleges.

The government had earlier fixed a fee ceiling of Rs 3.5 million for MBBS in medical colleges in the Kathmandu Valley while the medical colleges outside the Valley have been allowed to charge some extra fee as determined by the faculty board of respective universities.

Similarly, fee ceiling for MD studies has been set at Rs 2.3 million.

“The ministry issued the directive as there were complaints that some medical colleges were charging more than the fee ceiling set by the government. The government will take action against colleges not following the fee structure set by the government,” said Lamsal, who is also the spokesperson for the education ministry.
