In Nepal, modern education system developed relatively late. It began only after the establishment of Darbar High School in 1884 and Tri-Chandra College in 1918 AD, which was the first college in Nepal. It offered courses in Intermediate of Arts in 1919, Intermediate of Science in 1920, and Bachelor of Arts in 1923.

Tri-Chandra College was affiliated with Patna University of India. However, entry into this institution was limited to the children of Ranas or those close to the ruling clique. But the first and the only university of Nepal, Tribhuvan University started functioning only in 1959. By that time

there were several other colleges already in operation in the country. The following colleges were established by the Government of Nepal before the establishment of the Tribhuvan University. It was later affiliated to the Tribhuvan University according to the T.U act 1959.
