Professor Dr Prakash Sayami, dean of the Institute of Medicine, on Sunday withdrew his resignation after the executive committee of the Tribhuvan University (TU) made appointments to the top positions of the institute. Sayami had tendered his resignation four days ago.

The TU executive committee has appointed Dr Bimal Sinha as the chief of planning section, Dr Bharatmani Pokhrel as the examination head, Dr Sarad Onta as the academic chief and Dr Sarala Joshi as the chief of administration. Top positions at IOM had remained vacant for the past one year. This had severely affected the institute´s academic calendar.

Doctors, students and staffers of IOM had been demanding merit-based appointments to the top vacant posts and implementation of a probe committee´s report. The report had implicated IoM officials of involvement in several irregularities. Dr Govinda KC, a senior professor at IOM had staged hunger strike in May and August after the TU administration turned a deaf ear to their demands.

Dr Shyami recommended names for appointment to the top vacant posts immediately after his appointment on August 18. But VC Maharjan had refused to accept the names saying the names were not inclusive. Then Dr Shyami had submitted his resignation over the dispute. IOM sources said VC Maharjan had sought political appointment to the vacant posts.

"This appointment is also not totally impartial, “said Dr Dinesh Binod Pokhrel, chairman of the University Teachers´ Association, IoM. The association has called meeting of teachers for Monday to take an official stance on the appointments.
