In a press meet organized on the premises of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC said the recent ‘affiliation’ granted by Kathmandu University to new medical colleges was illegal and demanded action against KU office-bearers.
"The extended model of KU was not in line with the actual extended programme. KU officials have been claiming that they have not granted any affiliation but are running an extended programme", He claimed.
“KU has developed this new plan to bring down the piling political pressure to grant affiliation to Birat Medical College, Biratnagar and Dev Daha Medical College, Rupandehi,” he said. Dr KC even alleged that the affiliation was provided due to ‘pressure from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority’.
Dr KC also warned that he would be forced to begin another phase of fast-unto-death if the affiliation was not withdrawn.
“KU officials bowed to pressure from the authorities. The decision should be withdrawn or else I will be forced to take a harsh step,” he said. “Medical education in the country is deteriorating as Nepal Medical Council and KU officials have been showing fake details of infrastructure of proposed medical colleges for financial gains,” Dr KC added.
He even commented that some medical colleges were established with the motive receiving high returns from minimum investment. Earlier, Dr KC had staged a fast-unto-death four times demanding reforms in the medical sector of Nepal.
