PhD Festival 2080 - TUIOST

Tribhuvan Univeristy, Institute of Science and Technology announces the Ph.D. Festival organized by the Institute of Science and Technology (IoST) at Tribhuvan University (TU). This 2-day event will take place on 9th and 10th October 2080 (22nd and 23rd Asoj 2080) at the Central Department premises, located in the beautiful University Campus in Kirtipur.

At present, more than 450 students are doing Ph.D. in various 13 disciplines (Zoology, Math, Chemistry, Botany,  Physics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Hydrology & Meteorology, Food Technology,  Geology, and Computer Science & Information Technology) of science & technology under institute of science  and technology, TU. In the last year, 33 Ph.D. has been awarded. This year, IoST expects to award more than 50  Ph.D.s. The rate of quality publications has also increased in the last 5 years. In addition, interdisciplinary  research projects are also emerging targeting national priority projects. It is therefore, the Dean Office, IoST decided  to organize a 2-days long Ph.D. festival during 22-23 Asoj 2080 (9-10 October) targeting to improve the  quality of on-going Ph.D. works. The main attraction will be poster of all on-going Ph.D. students on the streets  in and around science & technology Central Department premises at University Campus, Kirtipur

Objectives

  • Showcase Research: The festival offers researchers a unique platform to showcase their ongoing research and present their research plans to the esteemed faculty community. It also provides an opportunity to discuss common challenges and explore potential collaborations.
  • Multidisciplinary Research: We aim to foster interdisciplinary research by creating a thematic umbrella that connects scientific outcomes with societal impact. The festival will encourage discussions on multidisciplinary projects and their potential contribution to national priority areas.
  • Learning from Experts: Ph.D. researchers will have the opportunity to interact with experienced professionals, Ph.D. alumni, and experts who will share their valuable experiences and career journeys. This will inspire and guide our young researchers in their academic and professional pursuits.

Poster Presentation

The highlight of the festival will be the poster presentations by each Ph.D. student. We encourage all Ph.D. students of IoST to present their ongoing research work. The posters should clearly discuss the research hypothesis, gaps, progress, preliminary results, challenges, limitations, and more.

The abstract call for posters will be announced in the second circular. There will be a "Best Poster Award" in four categories: Biological Science, Physical Science & Mathematical Science, and interdisciplinary areas.

Poster Format

Please adhere to the following guidelines while preparing your posters:

  • Recommended size: Strictly maintain a size of 2.5 ft (width) x 3.0 ft (length).
  • Font size: The font size should not be smaller than '24' (except for references). Choose a font that ensures readability from a distance of 6 feet.
  • Title: The title should have a font size of at least 96 for readability from a distance of 12 feet.
  • Use the TU logo carefully (preferably obtained from the TU Central Office webpage). Collaborator institutions' logos can also be added.
  • Incorporate figures, images, tables, flow charts, pictures, plots, diagrams, algorithms, etc., in your poster. Avoid excessive theoretical complexity (equations, derivations) and discuss them orally in front of the poster.
  • Keep the text minimal on the poster, and provide additional explanations verbally during the presentation.

Ph.D. Oral Presentation

Ph.D. students who have completed their research are encouraged to present both a poster and a 15-minute oral presentation. The CDRC will select Ph.D. candidates for the oral presentation. The call for abstracts for oral presentations will be announced in the second circular of the festival.

Responsibilities of Central Departments / CDRC

Notify Ph.D. students about the festival and encourage their participation by preparing a poster on their ongoing research work, following the given format.
Arrange seminars or talks by experts, supervisors, entrepreneurs, and scientists on 9th and 10th October 2023, focusing on research work.
Organize at least 5 contributory talks of 15 minutes each, where Ph.D. students can present their research problems.
Make arrangements for poster display boards and involve staff members to take care of the posters.

Responsibilities of Dean Office

  • Prepare and announce the first and second circulars, along with the festival brochure and posters.
  • Handle registration and call for abstracts, compile and publish the abstract book.
  • Extend invitations to organizations and individuals such as NCC, FNCCI, industrialists, entrepreneurs, incubators, IT experts, chief guests, guests, etc.
  • Plan and arrange for poster display boards, festival gate, advertising boards, banners, tokens of appreciation, and badges.
  • Prepare 20 posters showcasing the history of the Ph.D. program at IoST, Academic & Research at IoST.
  • Organize the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival.
  • Arrange a socialization event, such as a festival dinner, to promote networking and camaraderie among participants.
  • Oversee the overall management of the festival.
  • Prepare the festival proceedings as a "Special Issue of JIST," featuring one-page summaries for each poster.
