  • Actually, ‘Biomedical engineering’ refers to the use of principles of engineering disciplines for clinical diagnosis and therapy and for investigating the physiological basis of disease. Biomedical Engineering is for students who have technical brain with an interest in medicine.

Any kind of engineering related to medical science is called biomedical engineering, It includes engineering of all kinds of therapeutic and diagnostic medical equipment (e.g. MRI, CT Scan, X-ray, Ultrasound, ECG, TMT etc.), implantable devices (e.g. Pacemakers, heart valves, artificial joints etc.) and Tissue engineering (repair or manufacture of new human tissues and organs from cells acquired from the patient).

Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering is a fairly new subject, not only in Nepal, but in the world itself.  Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering program is run in Nepal with affiliation from Purbanchal University.  It needs the study of human anatomy, physiology and diseases as well as various engineering disciplines such as computer engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics etc. It is a complex subject requiring mathematics as well as biological sciences.

Biomedical engineering also includes molecular and cellular engineering, tissue engineering, plasma engineering, intracellular physiological control mechanisms, drug regulation and drug delivery systems, rehabilitation engineering, and aids for the feeble and the disabled. Biomedical Engineering is an exciting and fast-moving field with ever-changing boundaries. Here at CBEAS, we are pushing those boundaries in a number of overlapping and interrelated areas.

    Eligibility
Students from both Maths and/or Biology streams of +2 science or I.Sc. can apply for admissions for Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (affiliated with Purbanchal University).

    Where to Study?
In Nepal, the only college for studying Biomedical Engineering is the ‘College of Biomedical Engineering and Applied Sciences (CBEAS)’ located in Handigaun, Kathmandu (www.biomedical.edu.np) . In India there are a few private institutions running this course.

    Cost?
The cost of studying this course in Nepal is about NRs. 5,50,000.00, whereas in India, it costs about NRs.16,00,000.00 (excluding clothing, lodging and fooding).

    Scopes and Importance?

International experts have commented extremely well on Nepalese syllabus and method of teaching this course. Research projects, done by the students in the last year of the course have been especially appreciated. Two graduates from CBEAS have recently been admitted directly for PhD with excellent scholarships to a renowned university in Belgium. Others have been admitted to post-graduate courses in universities abroad.

Biomedical Engineers are very much in Demand abroad and are known to earn more than other professional in this category.  Nepal also has a growing market for such engineers. All the students of the first batch from CBEAS desiring jobs in Nepal have been employed in various hospitals and medical companies. Process for employment by government hospitals is underway. Students, willing to take up the challenge and do something new should study this subject.

In Nepal, Hospitals and medical device companies are in a great need of such Engineers. There are many specialties for post-graduation in this field. After graduation, one can specialize in Medical Electronics, Medical Physics, and tissue Engineering, Bio-materials, Biomechanics and many others.

After Biomedical Engineering, a bright career awaits the students at hospitals, nursing homes, medical colleges, and medical device industries as part of their Biomedical Staff. With ultramodern hospitals mushrooming all over the country, there will be a very large demand in this discipline.

Apart from this, there are various modern industries dealing in medical equipment, which prefer Biomedical Engineers. Through this interdisciplinary course, we share the knowledge to advance the opportunities and the significance of Biomedical Engineering in efforts that ultimately improve health and quality of life.

The Biomedical Engineering course is new to Nepal and till 2005; this course was not taught anywhere else in the country. Due to this, most of the hospitals in Nepal are lacking the Basic need of at least one biomedical engineer in the organization. So to fill up such gap, College of Biomedical Engineering and Applied Sciences, with tremendous efforts, has initiated to offer the course for qualitative products; which is on the way of its first successive year.College offering Biomedical Engineering in Nepal
