Tribhuvan University agreed to give permanent status to contract teachers

Talks between agitating professors and Tribhuvan University officials ended on Sept 25, 2012 with a two-point agreement. Prem Khaniya, general secretary, Tribhuvan University Teachers Association (TUTA) today said that Tribhuvan University tagreed to give permanent status to contract teachers through internal competition.

“Tribhuvan University has assured us it would issue notice for internal competition for contract teachers by mid-October to select them so as to give them permanent status,” he said. He further said that TU has also decided to form a five-member probe committee to investigate into the need of professors in Tribhuvan University.

“The probe committee, including three professors and two TU employees will be investigating how many readers, assistant professors and professors are needed in Tribhuvan University,” he further said.

Earlier, the professors had been staging sit-in protest before the office of Research Centre for Educational Innovation and Research where Tribhuvan University officials, including Vice Chancellor Prof Hira Maharjan had been working after their office was padlocked by Loktantrik Professors Association since the last few weeks.

TUTA professors had not allowed Tribhuvan University officials to go out of the office since yesterday evening. They were released today after they signed the agreement.
